Michael Polk’s Guide to Driving Disruptive Value Creation
About
I am a first-generation American, with my father having emigrated from Austria during World War II. My family settled in New York, where my dad worked tirelessly, eventually becoming successful and instilling in me a strong work ethic. My mother, born in Montreal, was a lifelong musician, and her passion for music had a profound influence on both my sister and me.
I grew up in New Jersey and later Connecticut, where I developed a love for sports, music, and science. I excelled academically, particularly in math and science, which led me to Cornell University, where I studied Operations Research & Industrial Engineering. While at Cornell, I was heavily involved in music, playing hockey, and singing in the Cornell Glee Club, which became a huge part of my college life.
My career began at Procter & Gamble, where I worked in manufacturing, an experience that taught me valuable lessons about teamwork and leadership. After three years, I pursued an MBA at Harvard Business School, which helped broaden my opportunities in the consumer goods industry. Despite my time at Harvard, my heart has always remained with Cornell, where I formed deep connections and lasting memories.
On a personal level, my wife, Trisha, and I brought together our two families when we met over 22 years ago. Between us, we raised seven children, and I take great pride in the incredible life we've built together. Now, as most of the kids are off pursuing their own paths, we look forward to the next chapter of our lives, especially the prospect of becoming grandparents.
